Raz Revah, Emissary from the Jewish Federation,
Addresses the Club

President Terri Rickel opened the meeting. Jeff New won the award for bringing the most guests at one time—nearly his entire extended family. Doug Risser gave Paul Harris awards to: Sid Sherwood, Scott Puckett, Dean Hupp, Tom Pletcher, and Candy Yoder.

Chief Sergeant Laura Ezzell discussed different methods Sergeants can use to raise money, citing examples of other Sergeants and looking at the year ahead. It ultimately cost everyone dearly. Sergeants collect money to be disbursed to local charities at the end of the year.

The day’s speaker was Raz Revah, the Jewish Federation’s Israeli Shlicha (Emissary). At 23, Raz has completed her required 2 years of military service plus one year (women must serve 2 years; men must serve 3). A Rotarian asked if the was something like ‘conscientious objectors’ in Israel. She said no, but each Israeli can choose where they do their service. For example, Raz chose to split her time working as an instructor at Havat Hashomer (training center for poorly disciplined youth), and in the Military Intelligence division of the ‘Iron Dome’ program.

Raz grew up in Beersheba in central Israel. She enjoyed soccer, handball, and Israeli Scouting (parallel organization to Boy & Girl Scout Programs in US). Since then, she has been on a journey of Tikkun Olam—a Hebrew phrase that means “repairing the world” which suggests humanity’s shared responsibility to heal and transform the world. She served a year at Project Ten at Oaxaca, Mexico, where over 40% of the population live under poverty, and is completing a year at the Jewish Federation offices in South Bend, Indiana making presentations like this one about her homeland and the Jewish Federation.
