Carl Risk - President
Elkhart General Hospital - Beacon Health

During the span of his 22+-year health care career, Carl Risk has worked at the bedside and in the boardroom, both where he said came to realize the three main goals of a hospital should be to provide high quality patient care, contain costs and continue to enhance the patient experience.

The Madison, Ind., native was named president of Elkhart General in September 2016, coming from St. Vincent Jennings Hospital in North Vernon, Ind., where he served as the hospital’s top administrator.

Before becoming an administrator, Risk worked as a physical therapist assistant, a profession he felt drawn to having played sports and suffering injuries.

Risk earned an associate degree in physical therapy from the University of Evansville and started working in physical therapy in 1996. A few years later, he reached out to the chief executive of King’s Daughter Health, Roger Allman. Soon Risk had a mentor and his sights set on obtaining a master’s degree in order to enter the administration side of health care.

After earning a master’s in health administration from Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis in 2002, Risk began his hospital administrative path, guided by Allman and another mentor, Doug Leonard, who is now president of the Indiana Hospital Association.

Since 2002, Risk and the entire health care field have endured an immense change.
