Participants Discussed Their Trip to
Nosara, Costa Rica, to Help the Kitson Library

President Terri Rickel opened the meeting. Sergeant Peter Norton quizzed Rotarians on their knowledge of Pluto – the former planet, not the Disney character. Sergeants collect money to be disbursed to local charities at the end of the year.

The day’s program began with Honorary Rotarian Angie Welter discussing the Interact trip to Nosara, Costa Rica to help the David S. Kitson Library. Several students from that trip described their work rebuilding the children’s section in the library and repainting the building as well as the fun of mile-long ziplines, surfing, and cliff climbing. Parent Chaperones for the trip were Angie and Scott Welter, and Jim and Karla Morton. Students on the trip were: Samantha Green, Will Riblet, Connor Flora, Ross Tepe, Scott Hanberg, Claire Welter, Liam Oneill, Nick Brewers, Daniel Asbury, and Alex Ganshorn.  Then Rotarian Tony Warning described the money that the Elkhart Club donates each year ($6,000 or $60,000 over 10 years) that has significantly helped the library. Indeed, our club’s contribution is 20% of the total budget for one of the 2 libraries in all of Costa Rica. Tony also announced that the Librarian at the Kitson Library, Beverly Kitson, would be the Rotary speaker at the September 14th meeting. Finally, Interact alum, Derrick Tepe, explained how he felt the Interact Trip had affected his choice of majors at Ball State to Environmental Science, and he wanted to again thank Rotary for affording him the experience.
