Welcome to the Elkhart Rotary Club Meeting on March 25, 2019; Today we welcomed Dr. Jann Joseph, Chancellor, Indiana University South Bend, and her guests Jennifer Essig, MA, CCC-SLP, Clinical Assistant Professor and Dr. Dennis Cleary, OTR/L, Associate Professor, the Program Directors of the IUSB Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy programs.

President Peter Norton opened the meeting and introduced Bill Kovach who shared inspirational words from Chief Grey Elk, led the Pledge, and our Four Way Test.

Candy Yoder introduced our Guests for today including Honorary Rotarian Art Decio. Guests of Rotarians included: Lou Ann Welsh (Tom Pletcher), Brittany Stone and Mike Shouse (Todd Stone), Caleb Stanton (Darrel Peterson), and our IUSB guests Dr. Jann Joseph, Thomas Fisher, Jennifer Essig, and Dennis Cleary. Margaret Southern was our student guest from Central High School. Welcome to all of our guests!

  • Peter Norton reminded the club of upcoming programs - - see the upcoming programs schedule below!
  • Rebecca Kuiken invited club members to attend a unique, 7-week seminar examining American values through reference to people and concepts in the context of their times. This seminar is highly participative with weekly readings and is in association with Dr. John Wilson, former chief economist for Bank of America and Yale professor. Contact club members Andy McCasky or Rebecca Kuiken (pastorrebecca@presby.net or 574-264-3109); Cost is $20 for Dr. Wilson's book: The Idea of America: Our Values, Our Legacy, our Future.
  • Jim Rieckhoff announced Elkhart 'meet the candidate' and debate opportunities through the League of Women Voters of Elkhart County at the Lerner Theater; the next is Wednesday night, March 27, 6:30-8:30 pm; for more opportunities visit their website at http://www.lwvec.org/
  • Jason Bryan announced that the Marketing Committee will be presenting a program on April 1 designed to orient club members to online engagement with the ERC, including logging onto Clubrunner through our website (elkhartrotary.org) as well as Rotary.org, the Clubrunner App, and Rotary.org. As an incentive, Eric Garton will match fines paid on April (up to $5 per club member), paid to the Foundation, for each club member who attends April 1 AND logs into Clubrunner and/or Rotary.org (on their portable device, laptop, etc) and udpates some of their information during the meeting. So logging in can help the Foundation, come on April 1!
Today's Sergeant was Kyle Hannon, who used a recent gift - A Calendar of Bad Jokes - as fodder for fines! Another great day of FUNdraising as Rotary fines are collected weekly and are pooled into a fund. In the spring approximately $10,000 is distributed as grants to not for profit organizations around our county.
 
This spring's first recipient of a Rotary Grant is Lifeline Ministries of Elkhart. Caleb Stanton, Lifeline's Senior Program Director, received the check from Peter Norton and provided a brief summary of the grant's purpose: to help with Lifeline's summer camps, which provide guided opportunities for underserved youth.
 

Today's speaker was Jann Joseph, Chancellor, Indiana University South Bend. Dr. Joseph holds a doctorate in the field of curriculum and instruction (science education) from the University of Wisconsin. Her master’s degree is in plant science and her bachelor’s degree is in agriculture – both from the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago. She served as associate dean for professional development and administration in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Before serving as associate dean, she was program coordinator for an integrated science education program and a faculty member in the Department of Biology.

Dr. Joseph introduced IUSB Elkhart's exciting new plans to bring Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy programs to Elkhart before turning the presentation over to her guests: Jennifer Essig, MA, CCC-SLP, Clinical Assistant Professor and Dr. Dennis Cleary, OTR/L, Associate Professor, the Program Directors of the IUSB Speech-Language Pathology and Occupational Therapy programs. They discussed the timeline for the program and the increased utilization of the Elkhart Campus.
